What to do

AI-suggested

The vulnerability has been resolved in the Linux kernel. Until patched, systems should be monitored for symptoms of soft lockup related to SGX EPC memory exhaustion on NUMA nodes.

Description

CVE-2024-49856 is a medium-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's x86 SGX subsystem that causes a deadlock during the search for an available EPC page on NUMA nodes. This deadlock occurs when the current node lacks an EPC section configured by firmware and all other EPC sections are exhausted, resulting in a CPU soft lockup. The issue arises because the search loop never finds the current node in the SGX memory mask, causing indefinite looping. The fix reworks the loop to avoid this deadlock by starting and ending on a node that has SGX memory.
