Until a fix is available, cautious use of affected PPP networking features is advised.
Description
CVE-2024-49946 is a medium-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's PPP networking code. It involves incorrect assumptions about lock state in the function ppp_channel_bridge_input(), which can lead to inconsistent locking and potential deadlocks. The issue arises because the code assumes the bottom half (BH) handler lock is held, but in some cases, packets are processed in process context, causing lock state inconsistencies. This flaw can cause a denial of service by triggering deadlocks in the networking receive path.
