What to do

AI-suggested

A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel. Users and administrators should apply the official Linux kernel updates that address CVE-2024-50115 to remediate this issue. Since this is a kernel-level vulnerability, patching is the primary and recommended mitigation. No additional mitigations are specified or necessary if the patch is applied.

Description

CVE-2024-50115 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel's KVM nested SVM (nSVM) implementation where bits 4:0 of the nCR3 register are not ignored when loading page-directory-pointer table entries (PDPTEs) from memory. This misalignment can lead to an out-of-bounds read if the target page is at the end of a memory slot and the virtual machine monitor (VMM) does not use guard pages. The issue arises because bits 4:0 of CR3 should be ignored due to 32-byte alignment requirements in PAE paging, but nSVM incorrectly enforces this. The vulnerability has been resolved in the Linux kernel.
