What to do
AI-suggested
A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel by removing the use of timer_pending() in reqsk_queue_unlink() and adjusting the timer handling logic. Users and administrators should apply the official kernel updates that include this fix. Since no vendor advisory or patch links are provided in the input, check the relevant Linux kernel security advisories or distribution updates for the fixed kernel versions and apply them promptly. No additional mitigation steps are indicated or required beyond applying the official fix.
Description
CVE-2024-50154 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's TCP/DCCP implementation related to improper use of timer_pending() in reqsk_queue_unlink(). This flaw can cause the reqsk timer to continue running after the associated socket has been closed, potentially leading to multiple SYN+ACK retransmissions and use-after-free conditions when BPF programs access freed memory. The issue arises from a race condition introduced by a commit that used timer_pending() to avoid deadlocks but missed del_timer_sync() calls in some scenarios. This vulnerability has been resolved by avoiding timer_pending() in the affected code path.
