What to do

AI-suggested

To mitigate CVE-2024-51014, organizations should first verify if they use the Netgear XR300 router with firmware version 1.0.3.78. Since no patches are currently available, immediate steps include restricting access to the router’s management interfaces to trusted network segments only, ideally via VLAN segmentation or firewall rules that block adjacent network access to the vulnerable CGI endpoint. Network administrators should monitor HTTP POST requests targeting bridge_wireless_main.cgi for unusual or malformed payloads, which may indicate exploitation attempts. Disabling remote management features or changing default credentials can reduce exposure. Regularly checking for firmware updates from Netgear and applying them promptly once a patch is released is critical. Additionally, consider deploying network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) with custom signatures to detect attempts to exploit this stack overflow. For high-security environments, replacing affected devices with models not vulnerable to this issue may be warranted.

Description

Netgear XR300 v1.0.3.78 was discovered to contain a stack overflow via the ssid_an parameter in bridge_wireless_main.cgi. This vulnerability allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted POST request.
