Red Hat has released security updates that fix this vulnerability. Users of affected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 variants should apply the updated tuned packages as described in the Red Hat advisory RHSA-2024:10384. Applying this official fix mitigates the vulnerability by correcting the improper privilege management in the instance_create() method. No additional mitigations are required once the update is applied.

Description

CVE-2024-52336 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in the Tuned package version 2.23.0. It arises from improper privilege management in the instance_create() D-Bus function, which allows locally logged-in users to execute arbitrary scripts with root privileges via the script_pre or script_post options. This flaw enables non-privileged users to execute code as root, potentially compromising system integrity.
