What to do

AI-suggested

A fix is available that reduces the number of retry attempts during efuse reads from 10,000 to 10 for USB devices, significantly improving responsiveness. Users should apply kernel updates that include this fix, particularly for kernel versions 6.x series and later. Since this is a Linux kernel driver issue, updating to a fixed kernel release is the recommended remediation. No additional mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.

Description

CVE-2024-53190 addresses a Linux kernel vulnerability in the rtlwifi driver where excessive retries occur during efuse reads on Realtek USB WiFi adapters. The driver attempts up to 10,000 I/O reads per byte on failure, causing long hangs and system unresponsiveness. The fix reduces retry attempts to 10 for USB devices, improving responsiveness without impacting PCIe devices.
