What to do

AI-suggested

A fix is available that modifies pci_create_slot() to acquire a reference to pci_bus, preventing use-after-free. Users should apply the official Linux kernel patch that addresses this issue. Until patched, avoiding hot removal of USB4 docks on affected systems may reduce crash risk. Monitor vendor advisories for updated kernel releases containing the fix.

Description

CVE-2024-53194 is a use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's PCI hotplug subsystem. It occurs when the pci_slot structure accesses a pci_bus pointer that has already been freed during hot removal of a USB4 dock. This flaw can cause kernel crashes on affected systems, such as recent Lenovo laptops with USB4 docks. The issue arises due to a race condition in driver unbinding and bus destruction order, where pci_slot does not hold a reference to pci_bus, leading to unsafe access after pci_bus is destroyed.
