What to do

AI-suggested

A fix for this vulnerability has been implemented in the Linux kernel. Users should apply the official kernel updates that address this issue to ensure proper handling of the HMB descriptor table. Since this is a kernel-level vulnerability, upgrading to the patched kernel version is the recommended mitigation.

Description

CVE-2024-56756 addresses a flaw in the Linux kernel's nvme-pci driver related to improper freeing of the Host Memory Buffer (HMB) descriptor table. The vulnerability arises because the allocation function may allocate fewer descriptors than expected due to early loop exit on memory allocation failure, causing an incorrect size to be passed to the dma_free_coherent function. Although this issue typically does not manifest due to low descriptor counts and the behavior of the dma coherent allocator, it could lead to a denial of service by impacting kernel stability.
