A patch is available and should be applied by upgrading to one of the fixed Linux kernel versions starting from 5.15.0-1074.77~20.04.1 and later as listed in the vendor advisory. No additional mitigation steps are required beyond applying the official kernel updates.
Description
CVE-2024-57925 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ksmbd component. It involves a missing return value check after memory allocation failure in smb2_send_interim_resp(), which can lead to an illegal memory write. This flaw has been fixed in several Linux kernel versions starting from 5.15.0-1074.77~20.04.1 and later. The vulnerability does not have known exploits in the wild. The issue is addressed by adding a check to prevent illegal memory access when allocation fails.
