Published: 09/05/2026 (09/05/2026, 11:37:59 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Genivia
Product: ugrep

Description

ugrep before 7.6.0 contains a heap buffer over-read vulnerability in the LZW decompressor when processing crafted .Z archive files. Attackers can supply malformed .Z files that cause the decompressor to read one byte past the allocated heap buffer, potentially crashing the process.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2025-15614 is a heap buffer over-read vulnerability in Genivia's ugrep software prior to version 7.6.0. The issue occurs in the LZW decompressor component when processing specially crafted .Z archive files. An attacker can exploit this by providing malformed .Z files that trigger a read one byte past the allocated heap buffer, which may result in the application crashing.

Potential Impact

The vulnerability can cause the ugrep process to crash due to a heap buffer over-read. There is no indication of code execution, privilege escalation, or data leakage from the provided information. The impact is limited to denial of service via application crash.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade ugrep to version 7.6.0 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed. No other mitigation or workaround is indicated.
