A patch is available that fixes this issue by adding a conditional compilation check to only create /proc/fs/netfs when CONFIG_PROC_FS is enabled. Users should apply the official Linux kernel updates that include this fix. The Ubuntu advisory USN-7594-1 confirms that this and other kernel vulnerabilities have been addressed in updated kernel packages.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's netfs subsystem caused a system crash when CONFIG_NETFS_SUPPORTS was enabled but CONFIG_PROC_FS was disabled. This was due to the netfs module attempting to create /proc/fs/netfs unconditionally, leading to a kernel BUG and invalid opcode error. The issue was fixed by modifying netfs to only create /proc/fs/netfs when CONFIG_PROC_FS is enabled.
