A patch is available and has been incorporated in Linux kernel versions 6.6.112, 6.12.53, 6.16, 6.17, and later. Users and administrators should upgrade to these fixed versions to remediate the vulnerability. Since this is a kernel-level issue, applying the official kernel updates is the recommended mitigation.
Description
CVE-2025-40067 is a high-severity vulnerability in the Linux kernel's NTFS3 filesystem driver. It occurs when the $BITMAP attribute, which tracks index entry usage, is empty despite the presence of index blocks, indicating on-disk corruption. This flaw allows malformed NTFS images to bypass proper tracking during rename operations involving long filenames, leading to inconsistent index states and failed deletions. The issue has been fixed in Linux kernel versions 6.6.112, 6.12.53, 6.16, 6.17, and later.
