Source: CVE Database V5

Description

CVE-2025-56362 is a reachable assertion vulnerability in the Matter SDK (connectedhomeip) before version 1.4.2. It occurs in the Level Control cluster's periodic server tick logic when a MoveToLevel command is immediately followed by writing OperationMode=2 in the Pump Configuration and Control cluster. This sequence causes an assertion failure that crashes the server, resulting in a denial of service. The vulnerability can be exploited remotely without authentication. Affected versions include all releases prior to 1.4.2.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability exists in the Matter SDK (connectedhomeip) versions before 1.4.2, specifically in the Level Control cluster's periodic server tick function. When a MoveToLevel command is sent and immediately followed by a write operation setting OperationMode=2 in the Pump Configuration and Control cluster, the server tick function violates the assertion `currentLevel < maxLevel`. This assertion failure causes the server to crash, enabling a remote unauthenticated attacker to cause a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can cause the Matter SDK server to crash by triggering the assertion failure, resulting in denial of service. There is no indication of code execution or data compromise, only service disruption.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid sending the specific sequence of commands (MoveToLevel followed immediately by OperationMode=2 write) that triggers the assertion failure.
