What to do

AI-suggested

  1. Immediately verify the cPanel version in use and upgrade to a patched version once available from the vendor.
  2. Until patches are released, restrict access to the Team Manager API to trusted IP addresses and networks using firewall rules or cPanel’s built-in access controls.
  3. Monitor server logs for unusual file write activities or unauthorized access attempts targeting the Team Manager API endpoints.
  4. Employ file integrity monitoring solutions to detect unauthorized changes to critical system files.
  5. Implement strict privilege separation and minimize the number of users with access to cPanel administrative functions.
  6. Use web application firewalls (WAFs) with custom rules to detect and block directory traversal attempts targeting the API.
  7. Regularly back up critical data and system configurations to enable rapid recovery in case of compromise.
  8. Educate system administrators about this vulnerability and encourage immediate action upon patch availability.
  9. Consider isolating cPanel servers in segmented network zones to limit lateral movement if compromised.

Description

An issue was discovered in cPanel 110 through 132. A directory traversal vulnerability within the Team Manager API allows for overwrite of an arbitrary file. This can allow for privilege escalation to the root user.
