What to do
AI-suggested
- Immediately verify the cPanel version in use and upgrade to a patched version once available from the vendor.
- Until patches are released, restrict access to the Team Manager API to trusted IP addresses and networks using firewall rules or cPanel’s built-in access controls.
- Monitor server logs for unusual file write activities or unauthorized access attempts targeting the Team Manager API endpoints.
- Employ file integrity monitoring solutions to detect unauthorized changes to critical system files.
- Implement strict privilege separation and minimize the number of users with access to cPanel administrative functions.
- Use web application firewalls (WAFs) with custom rules to detect and block directory traversal attempts targeting the API.
- Regularly back up critical data and system configurations to enable rapid recovery in case of compromise.
- Educate system administrators about this vulnerability and encourage immediate action upon patch availability.
- Consider isolating cPanel servers in segmented network zones to limit lateral movement if compromised.
Description
An issue was discovered in cPanel 110 through 132. A directory traversal vulnerability within the Team Manager API allows for overwrite of an arbitrary file. This can allow for privilege escalation to the root user.
