A patch is available and has been applied in Linux kernel versions 6.17.0 and later as well as specific earlier versions listed. Users and administrators should update their Linux kernel to a fixed version to remediate this vulnerability. The vendor advisory confirms that this issue has been fixed. No additional mitigation actions are required beyond applying the official update.
Description
A race condition vulnerability in the Linux kernel's framebuffer console (fbcon) setup related to VGA switcheroo has been resolved. The issue involves improper locking around the function vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set(), which could lead to out-of-bounds access in fbcon_remap_all() due to a race condition when switching outputs. This affects several GPU drivers including amdgpu, i915, nouveau, and radeon. The vulnerability has been fixed by moving the call to vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set() under fbcon_fb_registered(), which holds the console lock and prevents the race condition.
