A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The vendor advisory confirms that the issue is fixed by adding length checks and dropping malformed packets, preventing the buffer underflow and kernel panic. Systems running affected versions should be updated to the fixed kernel releases.
Description
A buffer underflow vulnerability in the Linux kernel's rtl8187 wireless driver was fixed. The rtl8187_rx_cb() function did not validate packet length before accessing the rx descriptor header, which could cause reading memory before the start of the packet data and lead to a kernel panic. The issue is resolved by adding length checks and dropping malformed packets. This vulnerability affects certain Linux kernel versions prior to specific patched releases. A patch is available from the vendor.
