A vendor-provided patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions. The Ubuntu security notice USN-8096-1 confirms that this and other kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed. Users should update their systems to the patched kernel versions to remediate this issue.
Description
A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's hfsplus filesystem driver could allow corrupted inode mode bits to be improperly interpreted when loading from disk. This occurs because the S_IFMT bits of the inode mode can become invalid if the 16-bit mode field loaded from disk is corrupted. The vulnerability was resolved by verifying the inode mode according to expected values based on the directory flag. Several affected Linux kernel versions prior to 5.15.0-1103.110~20.04.1 and related versions are impacted. A patch is available from the vendor.
