A patch is available and should be applied to affected linux-hwe-edge kernel versions. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this issue has been fixed in updated kernel releases. Users should update to the fixed kernel versions to remediate this vulnerability.
Description
A use-after-free (UAF) vulnerability in the Linux kernel's Chrome OS Embedded Controller ISHTP driver (cros_ec_ishtp) was fixed. The issue occurs because after unbinding the driver, a kernel thread (cros_ec_console_log_work) continues accessing the device, leading to a UAF and potential system crash. The root cause was the driver not unregistering the EC device properly during removal, which should synchronously shut down sub-devices. This vulnerability affects certain versions of the linux-hwe-edge kernel and has been addressed in updated releases.
