Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a heap buffer out-of-bounds read in the Avira Antivirus engine triggered by scanning a specially crafted malformed PDF file. Successful exploitation could lead to local code execution or denial-of-service against the antivirus engine process. The affected product is Avira Antivirus by Gen Digital, specifically engine builds before 8.3.70.68 on Windows, macOS, and Linux. No official patch or remediation level has been provided in the available data, and no known exploits are reported in the wild as of the publication date.

Potential Impact

An attacker with local access could exploit this vulnerability by providing a malformed PDF file to the antivirus engine, potentially causing arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the antivirus process or causing the antivirus engine to crash, resulting in denial-of-service. The confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system could be compromised due to this vulnerability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Since no official fix or remediation level is provided, users should monitor Gen Digital's advisories for updates. Until a patch is available, avoid scanning untrusted or suspicious PDF files locally if possible, and restrict local access to trusted users only.
