This vulnerability has been fixed in Linux kernel versions 3.19, 4.2, 4.5, and 4.6 and later. Users should upgrade to these or newer kernel versions to mitigate the issue. No additional mitigation steps are required once patched.
Description
CVE-2025-71183 is a critical vulnerability in the Linux kernel's btrfs filesystem related to improper handling of inode references during rename exchanges involving directories. This flaw can cause the filesystem log to become inconsistent after a power failure, leading to incorrect deletion attempts of directories containing subvolumes during log replay. Such deletion attempts fail and cause the filesystem mount to abort with errors and kernel warnings. The issue affects multiple Linux kernel versions prior to 3.19, 4.2, 4.5, and 4.6, with fixes applied in those versions.
