A patch is available and should be applied to affected Linux kernel versions to resolve this issue. The vendor advisory from Ubuntu confirms that this and other kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed. Systems running affected versions should update to the fixed kernel releases provided by their distribution.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's ntfs3 file system could cause an infinite loop leading to a Denial-of-Service (DoS) condition. This occurs when inconsistent NTFS metadata causes the attribute loading function to misinterpret empty run lists, resulting in an uninitialized data structure and a loop that never terminates. The issue has been fixed by adding a retry counter to detect corrupted metadata and return an error instead of looping indefinitely.
