A patch is available and should be applied. The Ubuntu security advisory USN-8492-1 confirms that this and other Linux kernel vulnerabilities have been fixed in updated kernel packages. Systems running affected kernel versions should upgrade to the fixed versions to mitigate this issue.

Description

A vulnerability in the Linux kernel's buffer management was resolved where try_to_free_buffers() could be called on folios without buffers, causing a null pointer dereference. This occurs when filemap_release_folio() is invoked on a folio with the AS_RELEASE_ALWAYS flag set but no release_folio operation defined. The fix adds a check to avoid calling drop_buffers() on folios without buffers, providing defensive hardening.
