Published: 10/09/2026 (10/09/2026, 10:19:40 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache CXF

Description

Improper Verification of Cryptographic Signature vulnerability in Apache CXF's JAX-RS XML Security module. The JAX-RS XML Signature interceptors (XmlSigInHandler, XmlSigInInterceptor and the streaming XmlSecInInterceptor) did not ensure that the XML passed to the application was covered by the signature. An attacker with any document signed by a trusted key could wrap it in unsigned content, which the application would then treat as signed. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.4 or 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, which fix this issue.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in Apache CXF's JAX-RS XML Security module involves the XmlSigInHandler, XmlSigInInterceptor, and streaming XmlSecInInterceptor not verifying that the entire XML content processed by the application is covered by the cryptographic signature. This allows an attacker possessing any document signed by a trusted key to embed it within unsigned content, which the application mistakenly accepts as signed. This flaw compromises the integrity verification of XML messages processed by the affected interceptors.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to bypass XML signature verification by wrapping a legitimately signed XML document inside unsigned content. This may lead to the application accepting manipulated or malicious XML data as if it were properly signed and trusted, potentially undermining security controls relying on XML signature validation.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache CXF to version 4.2.4, 4.1.9, or 3.6.13 or later, where this vulnerability has been fixed. Applying these official fixes is the recommended remediation.
