Technical Analysis

IBM MQ contains a buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-787) triggered by processing malformed compressed data on channels configured with compression enabled. This out-of-bounds write can be exploited remotely without privileges or user interaction, potentially leading to denial of service or arbitrary code execution. The vulnerability affects specific IBM MQ versions 9.1.0.0, 9.2.0.0, 9.3.0.0, 9.4.0.0, and 10.0.0.0. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 8.1, reflecting high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could allow a remote attacker to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary code on affected IBM MQ installations. This impacts system availability and could compromise system integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, consider disabling compression on MQ channels as a potential workaround if feasible.
