Product: ExifTool for photo and video

Description

CVE-2026-101947 is a high-severity OS command injection vulnerability in CellHubs ExifTool for photo and video version 5.0.1-gms. The vulnerability arises because the software constructs shell command strings from file paths without properly escaping embedded single quotes, specifically in the CSV-export functionality. This improper neutralization of special elements (CWE-78) allows an attacker to potentially inject arbitrary commands via crafted file paths.

Technical Analysis

CellHubs ExifTool for photo and video 5.0.1-gms constructs shell command strings by invoking /system/bin/sh -c with file paths surrounded only by single quotes. However, embedded single quotes within the file paths are not escaped, leading to an OS command injection vulnerability (CWE-78). This flaw is present in the CSV-export path, enabling potential command injection through specially crafted media file paths.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary OS commands with the privileges of the application user. The CVSS 4.0 score of 8.4 (high severity) reflects the potential for significant impact, including high confidentiality, integrity, and availability consequences. However, there are no known exploits in the wild at this time.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, avoid processing untrusted media files with ExifTool version 5.0.1-gms or sanitize file paths to prevent injection of special characters. Monitor vendor communications for official patches or workarounds.
