Published: 10/06/2026 (10/06/2026, 19:31:34 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Elastic
Product: Elasticsearch

Description

Uncontrolled Resource Consumption (CWE-400) in Elasticsearch can lead to denial of service via Excessive Allocation (CAPEC-130). A low-privileged authenticated user can submit a specially crafted query that causes uncontrolled memory growth in the query processing engine, resulting in an out-of-memory condition that terminates the Elasticsearch node. The condition can be triggered repeatedly, including by queries embedded in shared resources, causing persistent cluster unavailability.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-400) in Elasticsearch involves uncontrolled resource consumption through excessive memory allocation triggered by crafted queries submitted by low-privileged authenticated users. The uncontrolled memory growth in the query processing engine causes an out-of-memory condition, terminating the Elasticsearch node and leading to denial of service. The condition can be repeatedly triggered, including by queries embedded in shared resources, which can cause persistent unavailability of the cluster.

Potential Impact

An attacker with low-privileged authenticated access can cause denial of service by exhausting memory resources on Elasticsearch nodes, leading to node termination and cluster unavailability. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, restrict low-privileged user access to query submission and monitor for abnormal query patterns that could trigger excessive memory usage.
