Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: RIOT-OS
Product: RIOT

Description

RIOT is an open-source microcontroller operating system designed for Internet of Things devices and other embedded systems. Prior to 2026.04, the ATWINC15x0 driver's _atwinc15x0_sta_set_current_ssid function uses strcpy to copy an SSID without checking the destination size. When MODULE_ATWINC15X0_DYNAMIC_CONNECT is enabled, a nearby attacker can advertise a malformed or oversized SSID that is processed during Wi-Fi scanning, causing memory corruption and potentially a hard fault, denial of service, or code execution. This issue is fixed in version 2026.04.

Technical Analysis

RIOT-OS versions before 2026.04 contain a classic buffer overflow vulnerability (CWE-120) in the ATWINC15x0 Wi-Fi driver. Specifically, the _atwinc15x0_sta_set_current_ssid function copies SSID strings using strcpy without validating the destination buffer size. When the MODULE_ATWINC15X0_DYNAMIC_CONNECT feature is enabled, a nearby attacker can broadcast a maliciously crafted SSID that triggers memory corruption during Wi-Fi scanning. This vulnerability can lead to a hard fault, denial of service, or potentially allow code execution. The vulnerability has a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.6, indicating critical severity. The issue is resolved in RIOT-OS version 2026.04.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this vulnerability allows a remote attacker within Wi-Fi range to cause memory corruption by sending a malformed or oversized SSID. This can result in a hard fault (crash), denial of service, or potentially arbitrary code execution on affected devices running vulnerable RIOT-OS versions. The vulnerability affects confidentiality, integrity, and availability (all high impact).

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in RIOT-OS version 2026.04. Users and developers should upgrade to version 2026.04 or later to remediate this issue. No other mitigations are specified or required if the system is updated.
