Description

CVE-2026-102825 is a vulnerability in the Eugeny russh Rust SSH client and server library that allows an unauthenticated remote client to bypass the configured maximum authentication attempts limit. Prior to version 0.62.6, the authentication attempt counter increments but is never compared against the maximum allowed attempts, enabling excessive authentication requests on a single connection. This increases the risk of online guessing attacks and adds unnecessary backend authentication workload. The issue is fixed in version 0.62.6.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in russh versions prior to 0.62.6 involves improper restriction of excessive authentication attempts (CWE-307). Specifically, the USERAUTH_REQUEST path increments an authentication attempt counter without enforcing the configured maximum authentication attempts limit. This flaw allows unauthenticated remote clients to continue submitting authentication requests beyond the intended cap on a single connection, effectively bypassing the deployment's attempt-limiting policy. This can increase the opportunity for online guessing attacks and impose additional load on backend authentication systems. The vulnerability is addressed by adding the necessary comparison to enforce the max_auth_attempts limit in version 0.62.6.

Potential Impact

An unauthenticated remote attacker can bypass the configured maximum authentication attempts limit on a single connection, increasing the risk of online guessing attacks and causing additional backend authentication workload. The confidentiality impact is low, with no integrity or availability impacts reported.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to russh version 0.62.6 or later, where this issue is fixed by properly enforcing the maximum authentication attempts limit. No other mitigations are indicated.
