Description

CVE-2026-102941 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the gomarkdown markdown Go library. It occurs in the parser.IsSafeURL function when slicing a URL without proper length checks, causing a panic on short or malformed URLs. This panic can terminate the calling process, leading to denial of service. The issue affects versions prior to 0.0.0-20260724235538-61af6e1e6971 and is fixed in that version.

Technical Analysis

The gomarkdown markdown library's parser.IsSafeURL function slices url[:nPath] before verifying that len(url) >= nPath, leading to a slice-bounds panic when processing short URLs with relative-path prefixes. This vulnerability is triggered when rendering untrusted Markdown with html.Safelink enabled or by directly passing attacker-controlled short URLs to IsSafeURL. The panic causes an uncaught runtime error that can terminate the process, resulting in denial of service. The issue is resolved in version 0.0.0-20260724235538-61af6e1e6971.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause the application using gomarkdown markdown to panic and terminate unexpectedly by supplying crafted short URLs or Markdown content with unsafe links. This leads to denial of service but does not impact confidentiality or integrity.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade gomarkdown markdown to version 0.0.0-20260724235538-61af6e1e6971 or later, where the issue is fixed. No other mitigations are indicated by the vendor advisory.
