Technical Analysis

The Super Payments WordPress plugin versions before 1.43.1 do not correctly verify cryptographic signatures on payment webhook notifications. The signing key used to validate these signatures is empty by default, leading to improper verification (CWE-347). As a result, attackers can forge signatures to manipulate WooCommerce order statuses, marking orders as paid without legitimate transactions.

Potential Impact

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to forge payment webhook notifications, causing WooCommerce orders to be marked as paid without actual payment. This leads to potential financial loss and order fulfillment fraud. The vulnerability does not impact confidentiality or availability but impacts the integrity of order payment status.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Super Payments plugin to version 1.43.1 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Since the signing key is empty by default in affected versions, configuring a proper signing key and ensuring signature verification is correctly implemented will mitigate the risk.
