Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Apache Software Foundation
Product: Apache Directory LDAP API

Description

CVE-2026-103880 is an asymmetric resource consumption vulnerability in the Apache Directory LDAP API. When storing a password using the bcrypt algorithm with a high computational cost factor (e.g., 30), the LDAP server's CPU usage can spike and run for hours during credential verification. This can lead to a denial of service condition. The issue affects versions from 2.1.0 up to but not including 2.1.9. Upgrading to version 2.1.9 resolves the vulnerability.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability (CWE-405) in Apache Directory LDAP API arises from the use of bcrypt password hashing with an excessively high cost factor. The server's CPU is heavily taxed when verifying credentials, potentially causing prolonged processing times and denial of service. The affected versions are >=2.1.0 and <2.1.9. The vendor fixed the issue in version 2.1.9 by enforcing a bounded cost to prevent excessive resource consumption.

Potential Impact

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by causing the LDAP server to perform extremely costly bcrypt computations, leading to high CPU usage and effectively a denial of service. This could degrade or disrupt authentication services relying on the LDAP server.

Mitigation Recommendations

Users should upgrade Apache Directory LDAP API to version 2.1.9 or later, where the issue is fixed by enforcing a bounded bcrypt cost factor. No other mitigation is required once the upgrade is applied.
