Description

CVE-2026-103936 is a high-severity vulnerability in the JavaScript libp2p networking stack prior to version 6.0.28. It involves the @libp2p/webrtc listener processing unauthenticated STUN Binding Requests and forwarding a packet-controlled value as an ICE password without proper validation. This can cause an uncaught native exception leading to process termination (denial of service) upon receiving a single malicious UDP packet. The issue does not impact confidentiality, integrity, or allow code execution. It is fixed in version 6.0.28.

Technical Analysis

In libp2p's JavaScript implementation (js-libp2p), versions prior to 6.0.28 have a vulnerability in the @libp2p/webrtc webRTCDirect() Node.js listener. The listener processes unauthenticated STUN Binding Requests before authentication and other connection steps. It forwards the request.ufrag value into DirectRTCPeerConnection.setLocalDescription, reusing it as an ICE password without validating length or character set. If the credential is too short, node-datachannel or libdatachannel raises an uncaught native invalid_argument exception, aborting the process with SIGABRT. This results in a denial of service via process termination. No memory corruption, code execution, or other impacts have been demonstrated. The vulnerability is fixed in version 6.0.28.

Potential Impact

The confirmed impact is denial of service through process termination caused by an uncaught native exception when processing a malformed STUN Binding Request. There is no demonstrated impact on confidentiality, integrity, code execution, browser security, or connection limits.

Mitigation Recommendations

This vulnerability is fixed in libp2p version 6.0.28. Users should upgrade to version 6.0.28 or later to remediate this issue. No other mitigations are indicated.
