Published: 10/06/2026 (10/06/2026, 00:12:27 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10

Description

A flaw was found in sssd. A remote attacker can cause a denial of service (DoS) by submitting a certificate that lacks an expected Security Identifier (SID) extension. In deployments configured with SID-based certificate mapping rules, the service fails to verify the presence of the extension before processing it, causing the process to crash during authentication or lookup operations.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability in sssd on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 allows a remote attacker to cause a denial of service by submitting a certificate that lacks the expected SID extension. When SID-based certificate mapping rules are configured, sssd fails to check for the extension before processing, leading to a NULL pointer dereference and process crash during authentication or lookup operations.

Potential Impact

The impact is a denial of service (DoS) condition affecting the sssd service on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 systems configured with SID-based certificate mapping. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The CVSS 3.1 base score is 5.9 (medium severity), reflecting network attack vector, high attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction, and impact limited to availability.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-104038 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, consider disabling SID-based certificate mapping rules if feasible to avoid triggering the vulnerability.
