CVE-2026-104041: Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
CVE-2026-104041 is a vulnerability in the System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. An unprivileged local user can cause the negative cache of the Name Service Switch (NSS) responder to grow without bound by repeatedly requesting lookups for nonexistent entries. This unbounded cache growth can lead to memory exhaustion, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) where the NSS responder becomes unresponsive or terminates.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability in SSSD arises because the negative cache for NSS lookups does not impose limits on the total number of stored entries and only removes expired records when an existing key is rechecked. An unprivileged local user can exploit this by repeatedly querying for nonexistent entries, causing the cache to grow indefinitely and exhaust system memory. This leads to a denial of service condition due to the NSS responder becoming unresponsive or crashing.
Potential Impact
The impact is a denial of service (DoS) caused by memory exhaustion on the affected system. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The attacker must have local unprivileged access to trigger the issue. The DoS results from the NSS responder process becoming unresponsive or terminating due to resource exhaustion.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-104041 for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is applied, limiting unprivileged user access or monitoring for unusual NSS lookup activity may help reduce risk.
