Description

CVE-2026-104042 is a vulnerability in the sssd component of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. A local attacker can trigger a denial of service by sending a crafted PAM request with a zero-length authentication token, causing an out-of-bounds read and crashing the PAM responder. This flaw results from missing input validation when processing the token.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves an out-of-bounds read in sssd on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. When a local attacker sends a PAM request containing a zero-length authentication token to the responder socket, the service attempts to read beyond the buffer boundaries due to lack of input validation. This leads to a crash of the PAM responder, resulting in a denial of service condition.

Potential Impact

The impact is a denial of service (DoS) caused by the PAM responder crashing. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. The attack requires local access with low privileges and does not require user interaction.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-104042 for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is available, restrict local access to trusted users to mitigate risk.
