Description

CVE-2026-104044 is a vulnerability in the sssd component of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. A local attacker can cause a denial of service by triggering a NULL pointer dereference through a specially crafted PAM request when passkey authentication is enabled. This flaw causes the PAM responder to crash, disrupting authentication services on the affected host.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from a missing state validation check in the passkey Kerberos handling within sssd on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. When passkey authentication is enabled, a local attacker can send a crafted PAM request that causes the PAM responder to dereference an uninitialized pointer, leading to a crash and denial of service condition affecting authentication services.

Potential Impact

The impact is a denial of service (DoS) on the host by crashing the PAM responder, which disrupts authentication services. There is no confidentiality or integrity impact reported. Exploitation requires local access and no privileges are required to trigger the flaw.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-104044 for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is applied, avoid enabling passkey authentication or restrict local access to trusted users to mitigate risk.
