Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: litespeedtech
Product: openlitespeed

Description

OpenLiteSpeed versions before 1.9.3 have a local privilege escalation vulnerability due to a TOCTOU race condition in the admin update script lsup.sh. This script runs update packages from a directory writable by the nobody user without verifying them, allowing an attacker controlling the nobody web process to replace the package before extraction and execute arbitrary code as root during the next update.

Technical Analysis

CVE-2026-104474 describes a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition vulnerability in OpenLiteSpeed before version 1.9.3. The vulnerability exists in the admin/misc/lsup.sh script, which runs update packages located in /usr/local/lsws/autoupdate/. This directory is writable by the nobody user, which the web process runs as. An attacker with control over the nobody web process can replace the update package before extraction, causing the install.sh script within the package to execute with root privileges during the next update cycle, resulting in local privilege escalation.

Potential Impact

An attacker with access to the nobody web process can escalate privileges to root by exploiting the race condition to run arbitrary code as root during the update process. This compromises the system's security by allowing full control over the server.

Mitigation Recommendations

A fixed version 1.9.3 or later is available that addresses this vulnerability. Users should upgrade OpenLiteSpeed to version 1.9.3 or above to remediate this issue. No other mitigation guidance is provided in the input data.
