CVE-2026-104715: Improper Neutralization of Argument Delimiters in a Command ('Argument Injection') in Red Hat Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10
Description
A flaw was found in cifs-utils. This flaw allows an unprivileged local user to achieve privilege escalation. When a privileged service mounts a Common Internet File System (CIFS) share using a user-controlled credentials file, input values are not properly sanitized before being assembled into mount options. A local attacker can exploit this vulnerability to inject unauthorized mount options, allowing them to bypass permission checks and execute files with administrative (root) privileges.

Technical Analysis
This vulnerability in cifs-utils arises from improper neutralization of argument delimiters in command input during the assembly of mount options for CIFS shares. Specifically, when a privileged service mounts a CIFS share using a credentials file controlled by an unprivileged local user, the input is not sanitized correctly. This flaw enables the attacker to inject unauthorized mount options, leading to privilege escalation by executing files with administrative privileges.
Potential Impact
An unprivileged local user can exploit this vulnerability to escalate privileges to root by injecting unauthorized mount options during the mounting of CIFS shares. This results in full system compromise with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact.
Mitigation Recommendations
The vendor advisory from Red Hat should be consulted for the latest remediation guidance. Since no explicit patch or remediation status is provided in the input data, patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-104715 for current remediation information.
