Technical Analysis

The Pixel Tag Manager for WooCommerce WordPress plugin prior to version 2.2.3 does not perform a capability check in one of its AJAX actions. This omission exposes the nonce protecting the action to any user with access to the admin dashboard, including those with Contributor roles. Exploiting this, an attacker can overwrite the plugin's tracking configuration and execute arbitrary JavaScript in the browsers of all site visitors, including administrators, constituting a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability classified as CWE-79.

Potential Impact

An attacker with a Contributor role or higher can inject malicious JavaScript into the plugin's tracking configuration, leading to arbitrary script execution in the browsers of all visitors, including administrators. This can result in session hijacking, defacement, or other malicious actions executed in the context of the affected website.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Pixel Tag Manager for WooCommerce plugin to version 2.2.3 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed by adding proper capability checks to the affected AJAX action. No other mitigation is indicated by the vendor advisory.
