Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-105220 is a cross-site scripting vulnerability in klembot's twinejs product, affecting Twine 2 desktop versions up to 2.12.0. The vulnerability exists in the importStories() function, which improperly neutralizes input during web page generation. This allows an attacker to craft a malicious story file that executes arbitrary scripts in the editor window. The exploit can invoke the twineElectron openWithScratchFile IPC bridge to write and open a .bat file, resulting in arbitrary code execution as the user.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation can lead to arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running the Twine editor. This can result in full compromise of the user's environment where the application is executed. The vulnerability requires user interaction (importing a malicious story file) and local access to the application.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, users should avoid importing untrusted story files into Twine 2 desktop. Monitor official klembot channels for updates and apply any released patches promptly.
