Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves improper resource locking (CWE-413) in the ovpn-dco-win component of OpenVPN on Windows platforms. Versions from 0.6.5 up to and including 1.3.5, and from 2.4.0 up to and including 2.8.7, are affected. A local attacker can trigger a deadlock condition by issuing a specially crafted write operation to the ovpn-dco device, resulting in the host becoming unresponsive. The CVSS 4.0 base score is 6.9, reflecting a medium severity with local attack vector and high impact on availability.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation causes a deadlock that renders the host system unresponsive, impacting availability. The attack requires local access and no privileges, user interaction, or network access are needed. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact.

Mitigation Recommendations

No vendor advisory or patch information is provided. Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the OpenVPN vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until a fix is available, restrict local access to trusted users to mitigate risk.
