Description

CVE-2026-105481 is a time-of-check to time-of-use (TOCTOU) race condition vulnerability in the Node.js HTTP Agent connection reuse mechanism. It allows a client to mistakenly accept a response sent before the corresponding request, due to incomplete handling of unsolicited responses on keep-alive sockets. This flaw affects Node.js versions 22.23.3, 24.22.0, and 26.12.0.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability arises from a race condition in Node.js HTTP Agent's reuse of keep-alive connections. The guard that destroys idle sockets upon receiving unexpected data only triggers when the event loop polls for I/O. If unsolicited response data arrives but is unread when the socket is reassigned to a new request—such as when the event loop is busy with synchronous tasks—the guard does not detect the unexpected data. Consequently, the stale data is incorrectly parsed as the response to the new request. This issue is an incomplete fix of a previous vulnerability (CVE-2026-48931).

Potential Impact

An attacker could cause a client to accept a response that was sent before the client sent the corresponding request, potentially leading to incorrect processing of data. The CVSS score of 6.5 (medium severity) reflects limited confidentiality impact (low), high integrity impact, and no availability impact. There are no known exploits in the wild.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. No official fix or patch links are provided in the available data. Users should monitor Node.js advisories for updates addressing this issue.
