CVE-2026-105985: CWE-1336 Improper neutralization of special elements used in a template engine in craftcms cms
Description
Craft CMS 5.10.13.2 contains an authenticated remote code execution vulnerability in the Control Panel action app/render-components. Any authenticated user with basic Control Panel access can submit request-controlled component classes and property overrides. By first overriding an EntryType object’s uiLabelFormat and then rendering an Entry that resolves the same request-cached entry type, an attacker can cause arbitrary Twig supplied in the request to be evaluated by renderObjectTemplate(). This render path is not sandboxed. A Twig string callable can therefore reach PHP functions such as system(), resulting in operating-system command execution with the privileges of the PHP/web-server process. The issue was reproduced with an active non-admin Craft Team user with no optional permissions enabled. No access to entry-editing, Settings, utility, user-management, project-config, filesystem, Kubernetes, or environment variables was required.

Technical Analysis
CVE-2026-105985 is an authenticated remote code execution vulnerability in Craft CMS 5.10.13.2 and earlier versions before 5.11.0. The flaw exists in the Control Panel action app/render-components, where an attacker with basic Control Panel access can manipulate component classes and property overrides, specifically by overriding an EntryType object's uiLabelFormat and rendering an Entry that resolves the same cached entry type. This triggers the evaluation of arbitrary Twig template code via renderObjectTemplate(), which is not sandboxed. Consequently, an attacker can execute arbitrary PHP functions, including system(), resulting in OS command execution with the web server's privileges. The issue was demonstrated with a non-admin user lacking optional permissions, indicating a low privilege requirement for exploitation.
Potential Impact
Successful exploitation allows an authenticated user with minimal Control Panel access to execute arbitrary operating system commands on the server hosting Craft CMS. This can lead to full compromise of the web server environment under the PHP/web-server process privileges. The vulnerability does not require admin rights or elevated permissions, increasing the risk of exploitation by legitimate users with basic access.
Mitigation Recommendations
Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the vendor advisory for current remediation guidance. Until an official fix is available, restrict Control Panel access to trusted users only and monitor for suspicious activity. Avoid granting unnecessary Control Panel permissions to users. Follow vendor updates closely for an official patch or temporary mitigations.
