Description

CVE-2026-106061 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in GIMP's X cursor (XMC) thumbnail loader on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10. The flaw arises from an integer overflow during pixel buffer size calculation, leading to a smaller-than-necessary allocation and subsequent heap memory read beyond allocated bounds. This can cause GIMP to crash or corrupt process memory. The vulnerability has a medium severity rating with a CVSS score of 5.5.

Technical Analysis

The vulnerability in GIMP's XMC thumbnail loader occurs when the product of width and height for a pixel buffer is calculated using 32-bit signed arithmetic, which can overflow. This results in allocating a buffer smaller than the actual image size. Later, GEGL buffer operations use the unwrapped dimensions, causing an out-of-bounds heap read (CWE-125) due to the integer overflow (CWE-190). This memory access flaw can lead to application crashes or memory corruption.

Potential Impact

Exploitation of this flaw can cause denial of service by crashing GIMP or potentially corrupt process memory. There is no indication of confidentiality or integrity impact. The attack vector requires local access with user interaction (UI required).
