Description

CVE-2026-106581 is a high-severity vulnerability in Docker Desktop for Windows prior to version 4.92.0. The issue involves improper verification of cryptographic signatures for packages supplied to the Docker Desktop Installer. An attacker who can supply a crafted package and convince a user to approve a Docker-signed UAC prompt may execute arbitrary installer actions with LocalSystem privileges.

Technical Analysis

Before Docker Desktop for Windows version 4.92.0, the installer did not verify the cryptographic signature of packages passed to Docker Desktop Installer.exe via the install -package command. This improper verification (CWE-347) allows an attacker capable of providing a malicious package and persuading a user to approve a Docker-signed User Account Control (UAC) prompt to execute arbitrary installer actions with LocalSystem privileges, potentially leading to full system compromise.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute arbitrary installer actions as LocalSystem on the affected Windows system. This can lead to full system compromise, unauthorized code execution, and potential persistence with elevated privileges. The vulnerability requires user interaction to approve the UAC prompt and local access to supply the crafted package.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade Docker Desktop for Windows to version 4.92.0 or later, where this vulnerability is fixed. Since the vulnerability is resolved in the official fix, no additional mitigations are required. Users should avoid installing packages from untrusted sources and be cautious when approving UAC prompts related to Docker Desktop.
