Description

The Backup and Staging by WP Time Capsule WordPress plugin before 1.22.28 does not perform capability or nonce checks on the handler that deploys a staging site to the live site, allowing any authenticated user with a Subscriber account on a WP Time Capsule staging site to overwrite the separate live site's database and configuration and take it offline.

Technical Analysis

The Backup and Staging by WP Time Capsule plugin prior to version 1.22.28 fails to perform necessary authorization checks on the handler responsible for deploying a staging site to the live site. Specifically, it lacks capability and nonce verification, which permits any authenticated user with a Subscriber account on the staging site to trigger the deployment process. This vulnerability enables these low-privileged users to overwrite the live site's database and configuration, leading to denial of service or site downtime.

Potential Impact

An attacker with only Subscriber-level access on a staging site can overwrite the live site's database and configuration, causing the live site to go offline. This represents a significant risk to site availability and integrity, as unauthorized users can disrupt service and potentially cause data loss or corruption.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade the Backup and Staging by WP Time Capsule plugin to version 1.22.28 or later, where this authorization issue is addressed. No other mitigation is recommended since the fix is available in the updated version.
