Published: 10/08/2026 (10/08/2026, 19:09:08 UTC)
Source: CVE Database V5
Vendor/Project: Borewit
Product: music-metadata

Description

A vulnerability in Borewit's music-metadata library prior to version 11.16.0 allows an attacker to cause excessive memory allocation by providing a crafted MP4-family file with an oversized 64-bit extended atom size. This can lead to denial of service due to process failure or resource exhaustion when parsing untrusted media files. The issue is fixed in version 11.16.0.

Technical Analysis

The music-metadata library's MP4 parser in versions before 11.16.0 improperly handles a 64-bit extended atom size field controlled by an attacker. It converts this size to a JavaScript Number and uses it for payload length in atom-specific readToken calls before verifying that the atom fits within its parent or the available input. This flaw allows a crafted MP4-family file to trigger large memory allocations or process failures during parsing of atoms such as mvhd, stsd, stsz, and date, resulting in denial of service. The vulnerability is addressed in version 11.16.0.

Potential Impact

An attacker can cause a denial of service by supplying a malicious MP4-family media file that triggers excessive memory allocation or process failure in applications using vulnerable versions of music-metadata. There is no impact on confidentiality or integrity, only availability is affected.

Mitigation Recommendations

Upgrade to music-metadata version 11.16.0 or later, where this issue is fixed. No other mitigation is required as the vulnerability is resolved in the official patch.
