Vendor/Project: Red Hat
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

Description

CVE-2026-107651 is a medium severity heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Eye of GNOME (eog) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. The flaw occurs in the PNG metadata reader due to improper state handling when parsing split metadata chunks. A remote attacker could exploit this by tricking a user into opening a malicious PNG file, potentially causing a denial of service via application crash or arbitrary code execution.

Technical Analysis

This vulnerability involves a heap-based buffer overflow in the PNG metadata reader component of Eye of GNOME (eog) on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. The overflow results from improper state management when parsing split metadata chunks in PNG files. Exploitation requires user interaction by opening a crafted PNG image, which could lead to application crashes or potentially arbitrary code execution.

Potential Impact

Successful exploitation may cause a denial of service through application crashes or potentially allow arbitrary code execution. The attack vector requires local user interaction (opening a malicious PNG file), and there is no indication of remote code execution without user action. Confidentiality and integrity impacts are not indicated.

Mitigation Recommendations

Patch status is not yet confirmed — check the Red Hat advisory at https://access.redhat.com/security/cve/CVE-2026-107651 for current remediation guidance. Until a patch is applied, users should avoid opening untrusted PNG files with Eye of GNOME.
